11. Lake Gilmer Park [NOT A PLACE TO STAY!]
This list was created by a guest author, the lake is a fine place to fish if you have a boat – but there are no campsites or anything like that at the Gilmer lake park. There is a fun little park great for picnics and it has a swing set snd a sandy swimming area for kids. It also has a very nice walking trail.

State owned Parks
There are also state owned parks near Gilmer offering a beautiful scenery. Whether you are looking for a hook-up site, camping site or a relaxing site with bells and whistle or a more primitive camping experience, they have got you covered. Here are the state owned park ground near Gilmer:
14. Lake Bob Sandlin
Just over 30 minutes from Gilmer, and very close to Pittsburg (which has the best McDonalds around and a Brookshires that rivals the ones in North Dallas).
Lake Bob Sandlin is a well maintained but the “road less traveled” State Park when it comes to comparing it to Tyler State park. The lake is much bigger and it’s usually much easier to get a camping spot. Both parks are very well maintained with excellent facilities.

15. Tyler State Park
This park is very very popular – and with good reason – but if you are planning on staying here, book early! It’s not far from i-20 so there’s a sign for the park that get’s seen by thousands of motorists. And it has some excellent hiking and biking trails.
The lake is quite small compared to other lakes in the area, almost just a very large pond if you ask me, but it’s spring fed and crystal clear. They stock it with trout mid December. It has bass year round.
You can rent boats and there a couple of small fishing piers. There is also some very nice playground equipment. Tons of campsites, but as mentioned, it fills up quick! Only about 30 minutes from Gilmer.
